Modern US Silver $1 Commemorative Coins
were first issued to commemorate the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games. The 1983-dated silver dollar has the same weight, size and fineness as previous silver dollar coins: weight, 16.718 grams: composition, .900 silver, .100 copper (net weight .77344 oz. pure silver).

Congress authorizes commemorative coins that celebrate and honor American people, places, events, and institutions. Although these coins are legal tender, they are not minted for general circulation.
